Photo a Day Challenge - 31.3.2021 - I'm proud of...

 My Penniedarling story.

When our children forgot to say Please or Thankyou... I made them say,  'Please or Thankyou... Mummydarling, I love you very much.'

A big mouthful for a little one, they soon leaned it was easier to remember their Please or Thankyou's.

Then along came Nieces and Nephews and Mummydarling became Penniedarling!

Next came Grandchildren and Penniedarling stuck!   Nowday's it comes out first... Please Penniedarling may I have a ??? whatever.

Then after the Grandkids were told about my Aunty Cranky telling me one must never say, at the dinner table, 'Pass the salt' what one must say to the person closest to the Salt is... 'So and so, would you like the salt?' and So and So must say, 'No but would you?'

Soooo Now if the Grandkids fancy a something they say, 'Penniedarling would you like a Calippo? to which I always reply, 'Yes please Grandchilddarling and would you?'

Gosh, this was taken in 2018!

We got these more than 40 years ago... could be 50?? They were free with our collection of Greenshield Stamps.

We've lived in the UK twice in our marriage and both times when visiting a Supermarket one would be given a number of Green Shield Stamps after paying at the checkout, we can't quite remember when we managed to save enough stamps to get this very useful set of kitchen utensils... was it in the late 1960's or the late 1970's?  Anyway... they have been in use ever since they came back home to Aus with us.

I don't remember ever seeing anything like this here in Australia.

Stamp collecting like this started in the USA, read all about it below.

Photo a Day Challenge - 27.3.2021 - My Fav Word.

Of course my favourite word has to be PoopootoShirley!  I know, I've posted this before but....

 PooPooToShirley

This word came into my families vocab in the late 1950's.  Our Great Aunt Nancy aka Cranky was a great traveller and not only did she send us kids 100's of postcards from all the different countries she visited she would tell us stories of her experiences when she was home in Aus and this one is the best... well in my honest opinion.

Cranky and our cousin Sue were on the top deck of a Double Decker bus driving down Park Lane, London when they saw a youngish rather large woman skipping along singing... PooPooToShirley, PooPooToShirley, PooPooToShirley, PooPooToShirley,

and at the same time lifting her skirts up way above her head.

I've always loved this story and this word has become one of my most common and favourites. The blog I put together of these 320 Postcards has been archived by the National Library https://postcardsfromauntycranky.blogspot.com/

I don't usually wear this much 'Glitter' but when one decided to photograph 50 year old hands one needs a distraction :-)

Long Family - Alan Kelvin, Nancy, Edith, William, Samuel and Eileen our Mama.

Here's a lovely story...

Why was Alan Kelvin known to me and others as Uncle Bill?: I put this question on my personal Blog in 16.03.2009.

Now I need help... my Great Uncle Alan Kelvin Long was always known as 'Uncle Bill', Mum doesn't know why, my first cousin once removed Sue doesn't know why but my Aunt Pamela tells me it was from a story or nursery rhyme about a little boy called 'Billy Buttons'.

Pam said she knew Alan used enjoy playing with a wooden horse on wheels... so I did a Google but the only Billy Buttons that came up were the flowers.

Do you... Dear Readers... know of an early 1900's story or rhyme about Billy Buttons?? That same day I received this message from one of my readers... The first circus clown appeared in England in 1768 when Philip Astley created the character of "Billy Buttons". This act was based around the story of a tailor, who was also an inept horseman, as he tried to ride into town to vote in the election. The comedy act featured a lot of physical jokes, as the clown humorously exaggerated the failure of the tailor to correctly ride a horse. This particular act became a classic and variations of it were performed in circuses for 100 years.

The following day I received this message from another reader... I've just checked my "Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes" and Billy Button was a 1904 Kidson version of Bobby Shafto (Bobby Shafto's gone to sea, silver buckles on his knee...) Also: From The Routledge dictionary of historical slang: c1840 - billy-button was a journeyman taylor (which came first, the tailor or the circus I wonder) also, rhyming slang for mutton So which version of Billy Button was he named after? More mystery....

P.S. But enough is enough, I'm just happy knowing why Great Uncle Alan was called 'Bill'!
