Every time I make my Parmesan and Vegemite Crisps I think of a couple of young Americans lads.
One thing Americans are sure to say is that they hate Vegemite!
Way back in the early1980's we headed to Queensland in our Albion Double Decker Bus for a holiday with our children. At Burleigh Heads we met a couple of young American chaps camping near us, they were seeing Australia, our kids made friends with Chris and Tony and we spent time chatting and enjoying the beach with them... then one of these lads said that they hated Vegemite!
Our children of course asked me if I could bake my Crisps... which I did... then while we were all enjoying these Crisps our children jumped up and said... you're eating Vegemite, you're eating Vegemite... Chris and Tony stopped eating then had to admit that they did after all enjoy Vegemite!
Here we are up at Burleigh, on the left are Tomos and Nerys, then Tony and Heather a friend of ours then Briony lying on the grass reading a book next our friend Neill and Sally in their Campervan and David.A month or so after we'd returned to Sydney Chris and Tony joined us and slept in the Loft of our Garage for a couple of weeks ... one of the first things they asked was...
Do you have any of your Vegemite Crisps please!! YAY!

Guess what Penniedarling got up to today!!!
Yes... Vegemite and Parmesan Crisps.
Now let me tell you a funny story about Vegemite and a couple of American lads.
Back in 1984 we drove up to Burleigh Heads in our Albion Double Decker Bus not only with Nerys, Tomos, Briony and Gwilym but with Heather a young American friend, we spent several weeks enjoying our beautiful country. In a tent beside us at the campsite in Burleigh Heads were a couple of young American back packers, Chris and Tony. While chatting the conversation turned to how much these boys hated Vegemite! Well immediately 10 year old Tomos asked me to make my 'Crisps' (not mentioning the word Vegemite of course.) I made my 'Crisps' and shared them with everyone.
Chris and Tony loved my 'Crisps' to which all the kids jumped up and down in excitement saying... 'You're eating VEGEMITE, You're eating VEGEMITE!
Not long after we'd returned home Chris and Tony joined us and stayed for a week or more living in our Bus... the first thing they said was... do you have anymore of your Vegemite Crisps!! Yay!

Baking!
I find making balls of Peanut Butter Cookie mix is much easier when the mixture is cold and not too soft and runny so that's what I made today! Peanut Butter Cookies. Yay!
I've had these two tins for yonks and yonks so had to share, so beautiful aren't they if a little well worn.
My Vegemite and Parmesan Crisps!

Oh the Shock I received when this arrived in our letterbox yesterday...
I have been making Vegemite and Parmesan Crisps before the children were born, that has to be more than 50 years and it's still one of the most requested foods when family gather, along with Peanut Butter Cookies and Great Aunt Carol's Fudge.
I don't use a Pizza Base though, I use Lebanese bread.
Today I just had to make one of these 'Vegemite Goodness' Pizza's these people are making for a limited time only!
Bought a really good base and did my thing, below is the result.
There were two Pizza Bases in the pack I bought so I made a delicious Seafood Marinara Pizza for lunch. seriously good this was so a really good base but not for Vegemite and Cheese.

Vegemite and Americans.
I was reminded of this story today after a friend of mine made our favourite 'Crisps'.
Vegemite is not good.
August 1984 saw the Griffiths Family holidaying in their Albion Double Decker Bus from Sydney to Queensland, stopping off for a lovely week or so in the caravan park at Burleigh Heads. Camping nearby in a tent were two young American lads enjoying a surfing holiday in Australia, very soon our children were great friends with Chris and Tony.
One conversation that came up was how much these young Americans hated Vegemite, as soon as the kids heard this they begged me to make some of my ‘Crisps’ so of course I had to didn’t I. It was difficult finding some good Lebanese bread at the local shops but I did and while all the kids were at the beach Mummydarlings Cheese and Vegemite Crips were made.
That afternoon while everyone was around the table chatting we shared the ‘Crisps’ and it was wonderful to see just how much Chris and Tony enjoyed them… of course it didn’t take long for the kids to say… ‘You’re eating Vegemite!’ with much glee of course.
After we’d returned to Turramurra we enjoyed a lovely long visit from Chris and Tony who stayed in our Albion in the Garage and one of the first things they asked me was… did I have any of my Vegemite and Cheese Crisps!
We saw Chris and his girlfriend several years later, Nerys caught up with them in California sometime in the early 1990’s and we are friends on FB.

By Special Request, here is the recipe for my World Famous - Vegemite, Parmesan Crisps.
When I say 'World' famous I remember those two young American surfing boys we met up at Burleigh Heads back in the 1980's. Chris and Tony told us how much they hated Vegemite until they tasted my crisps, then when they came down to Sydney to stay with us they asked could I please make my Crisps, plus our English friends love them, actually I don't know anyone who doesn't, which is lovely.
Divide into two thin circular pieces.
Melt butter and brush over each circle lightly.
Lightly spread Vegemite.
Sprinkle each circle with a good quality extra sharp Grated Parmesan Cheese.
Bake in oven at about 150c till you can smell the most delicious smell, about 10 - 15mins?
Break up into smallish pieces.
Elodie was ready for a much awaited swim but on her way to the pool she spied her favourite V&P Crisps.Labels: VegemiteParmesanCrisps
