Something Good.

A Brass plaque will soon be erected on this wall at Cooma Cottage, Yass.  Home of the Explorer, Hamilton Hume for many years, bought and partly restored by my mother-in-law, Mary Griffiths.

You never know when you are going to meet a distant cousin... but at Cooma Cottage??

We left Canberra after lunch and headed to Yass to meet Sue Bell President of the Cooma Cottage Volunteers Group...   Cooma Cottage was the home of Hamilton Hume the first Australian born Explorer.

David's mother Mary bought Cooma Cottage about 35 years ago, had the roof replaced with similar tiles to the original then donated the cottage to the National Trust.  We went to the Official Opening back in April 1988 and have visited now and then, it's a very pretty place on a bend of the Yass River.

So we meet up and start speaking of the upcoming 30 year celebration of the opening next year when... the First Fleet was mentioned and Ben Carlos who Sue had invited to meet us because he's had a long association with the Cottage and knows all sorts of stuff... happened to mention that he was related to John Cobcroft!

Well I don't think Ben was expecting a strange woman with wide open eyes and a big smile on her face to give him a great big hug and say... Hello Cousin!!  he took it well though.

This is the first time I've ever met a relation out of the blue like this!    We did talk of Cooma Cottage and Hamilton Hume,  but we also spent a lot of time talking Cobcroft Family.

 Sue and Pennie.
David and Ben and a couple of horses.

Lovely garden and view from the Verandah.

Sue said Hamilton Hume's portrait was a bit scary... I sent her a photo of Sarah Cobcroft's Portrait... you be the judge... who is scarier!!
Hamilton Hume and below Sarah Cobcroft!

Cooma Cottage.

I just found these old photos of my mother in law Mary, they were probably taken in 1988 at the official opening of Cooma Cottage, once the home of Hamilton Hume.

We haven't visited for many years, we must one day soon, it is a beautiful place beautifully restored and maintained.

I found the below in among the history of Cooma Cottage  HERE

Overland explorer Hamilton Hume (1797-1873) discovered the Yass district around the Yass River in 1821. He returned to the area in 1824 while on an expedition to Geelong (Port Phillip) with Captain William Hovell. Hume was subsequently granted a parcel of land in the area which he took up in 1829 (ACNT, 1988, 50).

By 1970 the National Trust of Australia (NSW) was concerned about the condition of the house and had expressed interest in purchasing it. Approaches to acquire it failed, the owner J.L. (Jack) Bourke refusing to sell it to the Trust. Mary Griffiths, a Canberra resident, had fallen for it and persuaded Bourke to sell it to her. It was in a terrible state. Mrs Griffiths agreed to transfer the property to Trust ownerhip in return for the Trust spending $35,000 on it. She was to retain a life tenancy and intended to use it as a country retreat (Lucas, 2004, 17).
